Why I hate windows

When you have a itty-bitty mail to send with your 100kbps connection, some godforsaken program crops up and gobbles all your little bandwidth starving your browser and making that mail a half-an-hour wait.

Fixing Turbo C in windows 7

There's a FIXED version of tc floating around in the net and for general programs it works well. But one of my friends being an adventurous soul wanted to try some graphics functions and the program wouldn't run. The error was related to the path to the BGI files. The problem came to me and I remembered this being caused by the c:\Program Files location of turbo c folder. So I had him copy it to C drive and modify the path accordingly. With updated path the program stared working and a circle appeared on the screen. Made me recall my own college days.

The few good apps for windows phone 7.5

Image
Windows phone 7 is dead. At least my Omnia W is a good phone hardware wise and so I'm not feeling too bad about it. So what small favors you can expect to pull from a dead platform? I asked myself the same question and so I have come with this small list of apps that let mw do more with my dead WP. 1. A fast dialer - RAPDIALER: Wp's own dialer is good enough but it doesn't have any kind of search functionality. And scrolling through contacts sucks. So I use RAPDIALER to quickly locate contacts. 2. Messengers - IM+, WHATSAPP and SKYPE: Wp has Facebook support integrated but the options appear quite fragmented to me. So I use IM+ for Facebook and google chat, WHATSAPP for my few friends who are stuck with some featurephone which can have only whatsapp. I use SKYPE for video calls. *** Mails: Wp's inbuilt mail client is barely okay. But we don't have any alternate mail client for WP and if I could get one in the marketplace I would buy ot right away. But a...

Day Counter

I wanted to code something small to count days to a particular date from today. So I coded a small app in .net and found it very useful. It's done in about an hour so doesn't have much in terms of functionality. It has the target date hardcoded. But then again considering it's limited scope I didn't go to any more trouble for adding more functionality. Later I tried to do similar things in Qt and succeeded somewhat. There are couple of differences in both apps in that Qt version has colours used for numbers and text. And I have also included past targetted date display functionality in Qt version too. In this case before target date it shows Remaining Days while after target date it shows Past Days. The links are as follows: .Net Project Qt Project

Couple of annoying things

Image
Visual effects are often times pleasing, add a value to the experience and increase usability. Yet more often or not we come across some things that irk even the most patient of us. There have been few such things for me. I'll list them below: 1. KDE's busy pointer: Seriously how can be couple of balls rotating around is in any way relational to busy? In my opinion a clock, or a spinning hourglass (classic busy pointer), or a flashing icon of the busy app, or a circular arrow are more closer in meaning to busy. 2. Unity's launch feedback for newly launched application when the said app is not in focus ( the icon shake ): A bright glowing/flashing icon suits this action more than the current feedback which I call as "icon shake". Windows 7 has a better implementation for this (Bright yellow highlighted icon). 3. Windows 7 application launch as well as close effects: I don't know if other people find this as affecting to them, but our perception of how s...

How to get and install Laptop Drivers

Image
Most manufacturers let you download drivers from their website by entering your computer's model number or serial number. Here are links for a few of the most popular laptop manufacturers. You can usually find driver sites by googling  manufacturer name drivers . Toshiba Drivers Dell Drivers HP Drivers ASUS Drivers Acer Drivers Some manufacturers will provide a single download for all the drivers for a given model, others will make you download all of them. You should always download graphics drivers and chipset drivers if they are available. See if Windows' default drivers will work for network cards. If your computer has special keyboard buttons, like volume keys or a backlight, you should download the drivers for those. Other drivers may be optional.

Create Bootable Windows 7 Installer USB Drive

With introduction of Netbooks we seem to have embraced the USB era completely. But still we don't find the installer for Operating Systems. Guess, we'll reach there in couple of years (Kiddin' 10-15 Yrs still...). But till then the Bootable ISO's (CD/DVD's ) are the ultimate OS  installation media.  Well, netbooks don't have any CD/VD Drive, and wasting a CD/DVD on a single OS Install is Paap in my eyes. Also what if you can't find an external CD/DVD Drive! But the pen drives(USB Drives) have become so cheap and commonplace that it's very easy to get hold of one.  So we have a CD,DVD /an ISO of our favorite windows and we want to put it to a USB Drive for Installation, What do we need? WinToFlash is a great software that has done the Job a number of times for Me!  Get It  Here !
