Pardus 2011 Review

Image
I  am  always on lookup of new promising distributions. And I had my eyes on Pardus for quite a while. I wanted to try out it's 2009 edition but I wanted something brand new and fresh. I had heard about an early 2011 version in works and I was very eager to get my hands on it.  So we see here how far Pardus has come in Year 2011. Is it the killer distro that everyone would want or does it need some time still polishing the nails?

[Site Info] Changes to Layout

Getting Philosophical Aren't We? Whatever! Finally I thought I needed to spend some time to clean up this place, order things around and try to make it look better and at the same time different. I hope the new layout, the pages and the content etc look better than ever. To my eyes it does, but I don't trust my eyes - especially with [-4.5,-4.5] spectacles filtering everything that reaches my brain.  BTW last night I saw my Laptop screen without spects and it looked remarkably flat!(No kidding here!) As change is my nature I don't think this layout will stay this way for more than a month. But then again I have lots of things going around that hog my time. So it might stay this way for quiet some time. I certainly hope so! Anyway I hope this doesn't completely suck(Fingers Crossed).

Pardus 2011 FTP URL

ftp://ftp.pardus.org.tr/pub/ISO/Installation/2011/ The files are pardus-2011-i686.iso for 32-bit systems and pardus-2011-x86_64.iso for 64-bit systems. MD5SUMS file contains MD5SUM for both images! (Apparently their website doesn't list the ftp neither the MD5SUM's!)

How to get and install Laptop Drivers

Image
Most manufacturers let you download drivers from their website by entering your computer's model number or serial number. Here are links for a few of the most popular laptop manufacturers. You can usually find driver sites by googling  manufacturer name drivers . Toshiba Drivers Dell Drivers HP Drivers ASUS Drivers Acer Drivers Some manufacturers will provide a single download for all the drivers for a given model, others will make you download all of them. You should always download graphics drivers and chipset drivers if they are available. See if Windows' default drivers will work for network cards. If your computer has special keyboard buttons, like volume keys or a backlight, you should download the drivers for those. Other drivers may be optional.

Security tool uncovers multiple bugs in every browser

Image
SOURCE: HOWTOGEEK.COM Browser security specialist Michal Zalewski  believes  that Chinese hackers have long been aware of a security vulnerability in Internet Explorer which has only recently come to public attention. It is believed that this vulnerability could be exploited to infect computers, though current efforts have succeeded only in provoking crashes. The chain of events through which Zalewski found out about the vulnerability, which may have been circulating among Chinese hackers, is interesting. Zalewski, who works for Google's security team, reports that he discovered the vulnerability a while ago using his cross_fuzz  fuzzing  tool and reported it to Microsoft in July 2010. Zalewski also used cross_fuzz to discover bugs in other browsers, which he also reported to the relevant organisations. To allow developers to access information on the bugs, Zalewski took the practical step of placing the tool and the crash dumps produced using it on his server a...

Create Bootable Windows 7 Installer USB Drive

With introduction of Netbooks we seem to have embraced the USB era completely. But still we don't find the installer for Operating Systems. Guess, we'll reach there in couple of years (Kiddin' 10-15 Yrs still...). But till then the Bootable ISO's (CD/DVD's ) are the ultimate OS  installation media.  Well, netbooks don't have any CD/VD Drive, and wasting a CD/DVD on a single OS Install is Paap in my eyes. Also what if you can't find an external CD/DVD Drive! But the pen drives(USB Drives) have become so cheap and commonplace that it's very easy to get hold of one.  So we have a CD,DVD /an ISO of our favorite windows and we want to put it to a USB Drive for Installation, What do we need? WinToFlash is a great software that has done the Job a number of times for Me!  Get It  Here !

heise online: 27C3 presentation claims many mobiles vulnerable to SMS attacks

29 December 2010, 10:28 27C3 presentation claims many mobiles vulnerable to SMS attacks According to security experts, an 'SMS of death' threatens to disable many current Sony Ericsson, Samsung, Motorola, Micromax and LG mobiles . In a presentation given to the 27th Chaos Communication Congress (27C3[1]) in Berlin on Monday, Collin Mulliner[2] and Nico Golde, security researchers at TU Berlin[3], claimed that sending malicious text or MMS messages represents a relatively simple means of crashing current mobile phones. Some of the bugs discovered have the potential to cause problems for entire mobile networks.
